Here at Mufaro's Family Foods we're quite obsessed with different grains and their unique benefits, we think Finger Millet with its natural appetite-curbing properties is one of mother nature's best kept secrets. Another not-so-secret grain we've always had a bit of a fascination with Oats, Oats is a really common aspect of most of our lives and at one point or another we've all had a hearty bowl of oatmeal porridge!
Upon looking a bit closer at Oats we found some surprising benefits to the mighty grain.
- Oats helps you feel fuller for longer, which could help lose weight
Oatmeal contains Beta-Glucan, which gives you a feeling of fullness- helping you eat fewer calories. Beta-Glucan also promotes the release of Peptide YY, a hormone produced in the gut which leads to decreased caloric intake.
- Oats can improve blood sugar control
Due to the soluble nature of the fibre Beta-Glucan (which forms a thick gel that delays emptying of the stomach and absorption of glucose into the blood) oats may improve insulin sensitivity and help lower blood sugar levels
- Oats can lower cholesterol levels
Studies have shown that Beta-Glucan is effective at reducing both total and LDL cholesterol levels, it does this by increasing the excretion of cholesterol-rich bile. One particular study shows that antioxidants in oats work with Vitamin C to prevent LDL oxidation. Basically, Oats may lower risk if heart disease!
